What is Time to Market Expression?

Time to Market Expression is a go-to-market metric: how long it takes from a meaningful product capability becoming real to that capability being properly expressed to the market, meaning a buyer can understand it, experience it and buy it, sales can demonstrate it, and the website represents it accurately.

By Updated

Tim Rutten proposed the metric in “GTM = Product = GTM” as part of a new class of measures for AI-native companies, where the product can learn and ship daily and a quarter-long go-to-market lag means only part of the company is modern.

The distinction that matters is announced versus expressed. Release notes going live don’t count. The clock stops when a buyer can actually understand the capability, experience it and buy it.

How to measure it

  1. Pick one meaningful product capability your company shipped recently.
  2. Trace what happened between the moment it was ready and the moment a prospective customer could properly experience it.
  3. Count the people it passed through, the meetings, tickets, briefs and approvals, and above all the days. That number is your latency.
  4. Ask why it isn’t hours, then change the system rather than asking people to work harder.

How to shorten it

Treat digital GTM infrastructure like software: put the website in Git, connect it to an executable design system, give teams AI coding agents, and deploy through a modern pipeline. Days become hours, ten handoffs become two, and eventually entire handoffs disappear.
